Hey everyone!
It has been a few months since you have gotten an update. Things got pretty slow and we needed a better way. The course idea was great and we did some work but we did not get to finish it. So, we changed it up. We have worked our course into a 3-day workshop for grades 7-10. From Monday, August 9th to Wednesday, August 11th from 11 - 2 pm EST or 2 - 5 pm EST. It is a free workshop featuring guest speakers, interactive lessons, discussions, and so much more. Our team has been working hard over this short time to create posters, infographics, content, and games. We are looking forward to teaching these young students. As we progress through our newest project of educating the youth about daily disparities in the world, our team is constantly working hard on creating these lessons. We have been going through our first unit which is an overview of sociology and have been going through the lessons. We have already finished our first two lessons that we have created on Prezi. Race and culture are the first two lessons in this course and our team has put so much effort and hard work where we condensed such big topics into easier vocabulary and fun activities for our audience to learn. We have just started working on gender and sexuality as our next lesson. Since these lessons cover a lot, we have decided that we will work on one lesson biweekly. We can’t wait to educate these bright young minds. We have such exciting activities and discussions waiting for you! We are also inquiring on how to become a non-profit organization. This will help us with many of our obstacles and will be a great opportunity to expand. See you next month!
Written by: Amna Mohammed Hi everyone, these are updates on our service projects from March! First, we finished up all the care packages. We finished making them and we have already sent them off as well. We were looking at sponsorships we could get and were emailing and DMing a lot of businesses; unfortunately we didn’t get a lot of replies. We are also looking for grant opportunities so we can expand our organization and use the money we get for our future projects. We made a lot of progress and we started thinking about our new project.
What could we do? Well, we decided to make a course about health disparities and inequalities, where we would teach middle-school aged kids about the inequalities and disparities that happen in our lives around us. Our course revolves around the socioecological model. We are currently brainstorming an official name for this project. We have made a whole course outline with units and lessons around the health disparities around us. We have tied every lesson to how it fits in the socioecological model. Our goal is to educate these young students and get them more involved in the world. We believe it is important that we start to teach younger students about societal issues if we want to work towards a more equitable society. It is all held virtually and we will record the lesson part of the presentation and then post it on our YouTube channel and create a playlist for our lessons for other people to view and benefit from. We will stop the recording when the lesson is done before the kids interact to ensure privacy concerns. We planned fun activities at the end of every lesson for the students to be as engaged and excited as possible. We were also able to get a mentor to help us with our projects. Dr. Hsieh, who is a U of M Research Scientist, has agreed to help us. She is quite excited to be working with us and we are equally excited to be mentored by her. Thank you so much-- more updates coming soon! Written by: Amna Mohammed Hello everyone,
This is our third edition of our monthly community service blogs! Currently, we are still going through with current projects such as the care packages, and we are also trying to do a lot more outreach to spread more awareness and apply for grants and sponsorships. First things first, as you may already know, we are trying to send care packages to Prabhata Sindhuri, an amazing school that is located in India. This school does so much for families and kids in India, so these care packages will just add so much more to their efforts! This project consists of two care packages: one for older kids and one for younger kids. Currently, we are in the process of buying all of the supplies that we will be putting in these care packages. This includes markers, masks, books, and much more! In order to make these care packages as plentiful as possible, we are trying our best to put as much as we can. Because of all the expenses that come with buying all these supplies, we are also doing a lot of outreach to see if any companies or businesses would like to sponsor us or give us some sort of grant. This brings us to our second main thing that we are working on. We have been sending many emails to a variety of businesses and companies in the hopes that we can get sponsored. We have many of our team members completing this task of reaching out to companies, and hopefully we can get a sponsorship soon! Lastly, we also plan on making this service more official. In doing so, we will be adding more information about this project and our team to the website. However, like mentioned earlier, currently our main focus is completing and getting together these care packages as well as doing as much outreach as possible. That wraps up this month’s blog! Make sure that you continue to read these monthly community service blogs to stay up to date with our projects and current goals! Don’t forget to donate at Prabhata Sindhuri’s website: https://www.prabhatasindhuri.org/donate-page Any amount would be greatly appreciated! Hello everyone! We just wanted to update our audience on what we are doing for community service with another monthly blog to keep everyone in the know. We currently are going through some minor setbacks, but we are continuing to develop our project to the best of our abilities! First, our team has been working very hard to get our care package together for Prabhata Sindhuri. As a refresher, Prabhata Sindhuri is a school located in India that not only provides free education to low-income families but also speech therapy, physiotherapy, early intervention and sensory integration, pre-vocational skills, training at-home management, and occupational therapy. However, they lack substantial funding and, as a result, struggle with providing consistent therapeutic services to their students. We wanted to help this school with obtaining more substantial funding and offering them resources to help supplement the care they offer. We are in the process of compiling two care packages: one for older kids and one for younger kids. In the older kids' care packages will be a Crayola marker set, calming tools, sensory toys and masks. In the younger kids' care packages will be books, calendar worksheets, sensory toys, and masks. The care packages will also include a heartwarming cover letter, a drawing, an explanation of how to use the activities and toys, and how to use a mask. We will also be including art and music workshops for these students. Pranav, one of the co-founders of HealthNeedsRx, is also taking a course on special education for applied behavioural analysis to understand and connect with these students so we can best know how to help them. Our team has also been reaching out to companies to help with sponsorships, and we are setting up a new crowdfunding page to help these kids. Lastly, we are reaching out to doctors for Instagram webinars. Webinars will be coming soon. Our main project is getting the care packages together. We are working on helping a special education school in India called Prabhata Sindhuri. They are a humanitarian organization providing special education to cognitive and developmentally disabled children in Guntur, India, helping to provide free education to many of the students who can’t afford full tuition. They provide therapeutic interventions including occupational, physiotherapy, vocational training, and more for the children and provide support for the parents. Our project consists of three parts:
