As we progress through our newest project of educating the youth about daily disparities in the world, our team is constantly working hard on creating these lessons. We have been going through our first unit which is an overview of sociology and have been going through the lessons. We have already finished our first two lessons that we have created on Prezi. Race and culture are the first two lessons in this course and our team has put so much effort and hard work where we condensed such big topics into easier vocabulary and fun activities for our audience to learn. We have just started working on gender and sexuality as our next lesson. Since these lessons cover a lot, we have decided that we will work on one lesson biweekly. We can’t wait to educate these bright young minds. We have such exciting activities and discussions waiting for you! We are also inquiring on how to become a non-profit organization. This will help us with many of our obstacles and will be a great opportunity to expand. See you next month!

Hi everyone, these are updates on our service projects from March! First, we finished up all the care packages. We finished making them and we have already sent them off as well. We were looking at sponsorships we could get and were emailing and DMing a lot of businesses; unfortunately we didn’t get a lot of replies. We are also looking for grant opportunities so we can expand our organization and use the money we get for our future projects. We made a lot of progress and we started thinking about our new project.
What could we do? Well, we decided to make a course about health disparities and inequalities, where we would teach middle-school aged kids about the inequalities and disparities that happen in our lives around us. Our course revolves around the socioecological model. We are currently brainstorming an official name for this project. We have made a whole course outline with units and lessons around the health disparities around us. We have tied every lesson to how it fits in the socioecological model. Our goal is to educate these young students and get them more involved in the world. We believe it is important that we start to teach younger students about societal issues if we want to work towards a more equitable society. It is all held virtually and we will record the lesson part of the presentation and then post it on our YouTube channel and create a playlist for our lessons for other people to view and benefit from. We will stop the recording when the lesson is done before the kids interact to ensure privacy concerns. We planned fun activities at the end of every lesson for the students to be as engaged and excited as possible. We were also able to get a mentor to help us with our projects. Dr. Hsieh, who is a U of M Research Scientist, has agreed to help us. She is quite excited to be working with us and we are equally excited to be mentored by her. Thank you so much-- more updates coming soon! Written by: Amna Mohammed |
